Peugeot 306 Dturbo Information

The Peugeot 306 Dturbo was first released in 1995 as a 3 door sports hatchback with near identical equipment levels as the 306 XS. The XUD9TE engine pushed out a respectable 92bhp and 147 lb.ft of torque which allowed the oil-burner to keep up with the petrol 1.6 litre equivalents with ease.

It is important to note that the Dturbo badge signifies the specific model "Dturbo" and not the range of turbo-diesel engines as fitted to other models such as the 306 XTDt.

The turbo charged Peugeot XUD9 diesel engine was accompanied by a top mounted intercooler and due to its mechanical pump can be tuned with no specialist tools to power figures in the region of 110bhp with no additional modifications. The sporty diesel came with electric windows, deeper front bumpers and side skirts as standard options, with alloy wheels as an optional extra.

Starting in 1999 the mechanical XUD9TE engine was replaced with the Peugeot DW10TD common rail diesel engine commercially dubbed as the HDi90. As the figure suggests the DW10 used in the 306 developed 90bhp, a few short of the original Dturbo lump but the common rail engine really came in to its own due to the huge 167lb.ft of torque it produces.

Due to the more efficient design of the HDi unit there was no intercooler fitted to the Peugeot 306 HDi range. The HDi engine also has a T25 type turbocharger with a smaller inlet compared to the T2 unit on the original Dturbo, and will need to be replaced if you intend to tune a 306 HDi above 130bhp.

Both the XUD9TE and DW10TD engines are very popular with modified car enthusiasts as they can both be easily tuned to 120bhp with a relatively small amount of money compared to a petrol equivalent such as the 2 litre XU10J2 engine.

More information about the Peugeot 306 Dturbo and popular turbo-diesel tuning modifications can be found in my article on Club-306.
